EDITORIAL: On the watch for scams

THE news that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission received 37,000 complaints about online scams in the last year is very concerning.

The criminals operating these scams are obviously very convincing and determined to get access to the pubic’s personal details.

The combined financial losses in 2013 amounted to more than $71 million.

The younger generation who have grown up with technology should be able to spot a hacking email or a questionable website from a mile away but not everyone is so lucky.

Perhaps it is time for children to take a minute to show their parents what scamming ads and spam emails look like so they are better equipped to spot them when surfing the web.

There are a number of simple tips for avoiding scams on the Bunbury Mail website which should go some way towards helping the problem.
