Jojo nominated in regional awards

LOCAL artist, community worker and educator Jojo Spook is up for an award at the 2014 Regional Awards sponsored by Brand SA.

Jojo Spook is up for a Brand SA Limestone Coast Regional Art Award, one she is no stranger to winning.

No stranger to the Brand SA accolade, Jojo said it was always nice to get a pat on the back.

“It’s always rewarding to be acknowledged for your passion and dedication, especially in a difficult field like the arts,” she said.

“Being an artist takes on many roles within a community.”

Jojo is a secondary art and technical studies teacher, she also takes community art workshops and has taken on grant writing for many community groups.

Each year she develops a new body of work to exhibit, which she says requires a personal journey of ideas and concepts through experimentation and research.

Jojo said though she has received many awards for her art it was only a bonus to win.

“It demonstrates that I have been acknowledged for my constant support, redeveloping my skills as an established artist and my contribution to community and education,” she said.

“Being nominated is enough, receiving the award is a bonus, it proves I am doing the best I can within my field.

“Having a section of the regional awards for art is important as it encourages others to not only participate but also encourage greater success within a growing field.”

Jojo said having an award to recognise those who contribute to the arts in the region gives it value and importance alongside other areas like sport and community initiatives.

“Arts is growing all the time and an award dedicated to this in the SE is important,” Jojo said.

“There are plenty of established artists in the SE that need to be acknowledged.”

Last year Jojo was awarded State teaching award “Inspirational Teacher”, which also landed her in the national teaching awards.

There are plenty of projects in the works for Jojo with “Barking Mad”, an event for all dog lovers of Robe in the not too distant future.

This event includes the launch of a colouring book designed by Jojo.

The artist was also very active in developing the Lucindale Youth Group and with them has refurbished the Lucindale skate park and accommodated two public sculpture commissions which were completed last year.

The 2014 Limestone Coast Regional Awards night will be held in Mount Gambier in October.
