AS my Senate term ends on June 30 and I return to private life, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the work you do as local media, reporting on the day-to-day issues of concern to your local community.
Thank you for the fair and consistent way in which you have reproduced my press releases and sought my opinions on local issues of concern.
While many of the things we have discussed may not have made the headlines I have tried hard to keep people informed of critical issues, without taking away from the role of local members to perform that duty.
A senator’s role is challenging – and our work is very different from a House of Representatives member. So, while much of our private discussions may have never made the news I hope that background and explanations have been useful for you in your editorial content and political analysis.
In country NSW we should never underestimate the power and influence of local media – building social cohesion and supporting local communities in times of trouble and celebration. I have had the privilege of witnessing this firsthand – through floods, fires and disasters over the past three decades.
Keep up the great work and thank you for your service to the community.
Senator for NSW.
