REPORT: LUCINDALE won the Wilks Cup over Kingston with a fourth quarter burst of goals to open up an otherwise close game between the two rival clubs.
Kingston were still looking for their first win of the season and they got off to a great start when Sam Braidwood marked and goaled to give the Saints the instant start they were looking for.
Lucindale coach Sam Logan was playing just his second game for the season and he was able to get a reply after both teams missed easy shots on goal.
Mark Snowball and Matt Williams were having a great duel in the ruck and both were going to be pivotal to their respective teams’ chances of winning.
Aaron Smart and Sam Logan got goals for the Roos as they opened up a 13 point lead by quarter time.
Tyler Baker and Jamie Austin were on fire early for the Saints while the Roos had Sam Logan, Sam Mardling and Travis Ware in good form.
Sam Braidwood started the second quarter as he did in the first with the first goal but Lucindale took hold of the next 10 minutes of play and kicked three goals in a row to grab a 24 point jump on the Saints.
Mark Snowball, Josh Teakle and Aaron Smart were looking very dangerous around the ground and things were opening up for the Roos.
Kingston needed a lift and their midfield responded beautifully.
That allowed the Saints to peg the Roos back with goals from Jake Hyland, Ben Warner and Ashley Stenner who kicked two goals of his own and the Saints were only a point behind. Lucindale were able to run the length of the field after a Saints missed shot on goal and Sam Logan got the goal just before the half time siren.
Mardling was having a big influence for the Roos, always looking damaging when he had the ball.
Lucindale this time got the good start as coach Logan continued to cause Kingston trouble with his leading and goal kicking.
Sam Braidwood responded for the Saints but Lucindale seemed in control throughout the game and always had an answer to any Kingston challenge.
Aaron Smart was damaging around the ground and he kicked a goal after coach Sam Logan kicked one as the Roos were threatening to pull away with the game.
Ashley Stenner who has played mostly in attack this season was able to kick two goals in a row for the Saints as they brought the margin back to seven points.
Matt Williams, Jamie Austin, Ben Warner and Tyler Baker were doing great work for the Saints around the packs, trying to push the ball forward at all costs.
Patrick Baker used his smarts to get the ball and kick a late goal to put the Roos up by 13 points at the final change.
In the Wilks Cup it was fitting that Ryan Wilks was playing a good game for the visiting Roos as he was working the ball forward often. Snowball and Teakle were also playing well for the Roos.
Lucindale got the all important first goal in the fourth quarter as Sam Mardling delivered a major.

Austin was working hard driving the ball forward. Travis Ware was prominent for the Roos as well. Lucindale were feeling the urgency as the game was getting tight and the Saints were pressing hard. The Roos pushed forward and Josh Teakle goaled and then coach Sam Logan got away again to goal as the Roos were fired up and pulling away from Kingston.
The Saints just couldn’t get any good passages of play going around the ground as the Roos were putting them under pressure everywhere.
Aaron Smart was getting heaps of the ball and the Roos were putting the results on the scoreboard.
Mardling kicked the sealing goals as he put two more through and the Roos ran away to win by 35 points in the end.
