Anderson puttogether wave scores of 9.43 and 8.67 for a total of 18.10 to dominate her round two heat in the six-star QS contest early Friday morning AEST.
The 22-year-old, dropped last year by her major sponsor, was approaching the event as make or break for her 2014 campaign to make the championship tour after three poor results.
The next best two-wave total this morning was 16.76 fromCT star and Surfest runner-upAlessa Quizon.
Anderson was surfing was for the first time in Mexico and was excited with her start at the contest.
“First heat’s always pretty nervous, you travel all this way and want to do well,” she told the ASP.
“I started with that five and then to drop the eight, it felt pretty good.
“The end goal is to qualify (for the CT) but there are a lot of good girls up there so you have to work hard on it. I haven’t started that well so it felt good to get that one.”
