A number of Mid SE Netball and Football clubs including the Robe Roosters Netball club have donated their old uniforms to children at the Mpakeni Primary School and the Chief Charles Secondary School in South Africa.

Mount Gambier residents Paul Thiele and partner Faye Wilson delivered the uniforms and equipment to South Africa after a chance meeting in 2011.

“Faye and I travelled to the US for a holiday in 2011,” Paul said.

“While we were in Vegas we bumped into a couple from South Africa, Johan and Magda Barnard.

“It was a chance meeting as we were all in a shopping centre, in the same shop and spoke to each other for only 15 minutes.”

The Barnards told Paul and Faye about their home, and suggested the couple visit there one day.

“They believe it (South Africa) to be the best place in the world, as they would,” Paul said.

“I told them that I have had the place in mind as I would like to photograph the wild animals in their home environment.”

Over the following six months the two couples exchanged emails and spoke on the phone and then Paul and Faye planned a trip to South Africa for August 2012. Paul and Faye travelled flew into Johannesburg and were picked up by Johan who brought them to his village, Nelspruit.

“While we were with them they introduced us to a school which they support and also told us of other organisations they are involved in,” Paul said.

“Johan is involved with many charitable and community organisations.”

In 2013 Paul and Faye returned to South Africa and visited the village of Mpakeni in the hills near Kruger National Park.
