Open season: The 2014 Theatre Season at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre opens with Love Letters, starring Hannah Waterman and Huw Higginson. Picture: Jane DysonSUTHERLAND Entertainment Centre has launched its 2014 theatre season by announcing four professional productions this year.
The first — Love Letters — stars two international TV stars in a two-person play.
Hannah Waterman of EastEnders fame and Huw Higginson from The Bill will perform under the direction of AFI Award winner Denny Lawrence.
The pair moved to Sydney from Britain last year and have toured Love Letters around the country.
The play follows the lives of two characters spanning more than 50 years and is told through the recital of letters.
“Some people think it’s an odd premise because the device is actually reading the letters,” said Higginson.
“It’s not what you’d normally get on stage but it serves the story really well.
“Some of the letters are very funny, others more poignant and you get a very good idea of the lives of these two people.”
The play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1990.
It begins with the characters in school and follows them as they progress through life.
“The reaction has been quite overwhelming,” Waterman said.
“A lot of people told us they didn’t know what to expect but that they hadn’t laughed so hard in a theatre in a long time.”
Love Letters will open the 2014 theatre seasonat Sutherland Entertainment Centre at 8pm on Friday, June 20.
